Department of meteorological forecasts

Department of meteorological forecasts - a combination of experience and youth - is the main operational and production unit of the Center for analysis, forecasting of weather conditions and hydrometeorological support of the Ukrainian hydrometeorological center. .Among us and and it has always been so, there are three generations of forecasters: with experience from 35 to 5 years and very young specialists studying at the graduate courses at the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University (alma mater of most of our forecasters) or just graduated from Odessa Environmental University.

We are lucky enough to have chosen an interesting and exciting, but also complex and demanding profession. As part of the large family of meteorologists united by the World Meteorological Organization, we have to ensure the resilience of the population, governments and industries to weather changes, natural disasters and hazardous weather phenomena:

  • We provide a round-the-clock monitoring weather forecasts in Ukraine
  • We regularly make up weather forecasts for 1-10 days and season predictions and warnings about the levels of pollution,
  • We quickly draw up warnings about the threat of dangerous weather and natural disasters in the country and the Black and Azov seas within our responsibility,
  • We also perform quality control of forecasts and warnings
  • We make monthly and annual surveys of weather conditions.

This amount of work is carried out through a national network of observations (meteorological and aerological stations), satellite and radar data, the mutual exchange of information with national and international meteorological centers of Members of WMO and through the introduction of modern technologies.

Let`s recall the history. Accept life greatly depends on the weather. Some of the processes occurring in our atmosphere are so extreme that affect people both physically and emotionally. The weather has for centuries caused on the one hand the fear and admiration of the other hand- the natural curiosity of people due to which "meteorology", one of the oldest sciences, was born. Its father - Aristotle in IV. BC. BC in the book titled "Meteorologika" first collected information about many phenomena in the atmosphere and attempted to explain them. But only inventions made in the Renaissance - the thermometer and barometer in 1597 and in 1644 - opened up the possibility for quantitative description of atmospheric phenomena. In 1780 the Mannheim Meteorological Society was created - the first to organize observation of the weather on 40 stations around the world based on which on Brandes in 1820 created the first synoptic maps of Europe. In 1836 in Lugansk the first regular meteorological observations commenced, and on June 21, 1921 the first synoptic map of Ukraine was produced.

Present. Today's global monitoring system that is subject to WMO, consists of about 10,000 ground stations (including 189 in Ukraine), 1000 aerological stations on land (8) and on ships, 100 drifting stations and 600 buoys. Data from these observations are presented today at our synoptic maps. The term ΣΥΝΟΠΤΙΚΟΣ means in Greek "able to see everything", hence the name of our profession - forecaster. By the way, most of Meteorology terms are from Greek and Latin, which also testifies that the science has a long history to be proud of. New technologies permanently come to support the main synoptic method: of atmospheric processes analysis and prediction of weather conditions using synoptic charts. Since 30 years of XX century. aerological observations have been being carryied out and altitude up to 20-25 km. weather charts compiling began On October 4, 1957 an satellite was put on the Earth orbit for the first time in the world, and from 1958 meteorological equipment. have beeb being installed on artificial Earth satellites Since 1968 the UHMC started getting satellite data, allowing to conduct synoptic analysis more objectively, to timely detect hazardous weather and natural disasters. Since 60 years radar observations helped to better anticipate insidious convective phenomena: thunderstorms, hail, squalls, rain, the first processing of meteorological information by computer began at that time. Over the last decade means of production of forecasters have been extremely upgraded: workstation of a meteorologist, data from the European geostationary satellite and Doppler radar at the airport Borispol. All this, together with the experience of the older generation and enthusiasm of young forecasters allow to make high quality predictions with forecast success rate  90-95% for 1-5 days.

Those who live in our country have a unique opportunity to hear on our National Radio Company and to watch on many TV channels of Ukraine and to get quality weather forecasts directly from those who make these predictions. Our reliable information is put on the pages of many publications  including: "The Governmental Courier", "The Facts and Comments", "The Young Ukraine", "the Newspaper in Ukrainian", "The Komsomolskaya Pravda in Ukraine", "The Argumenty i Fakty in Ukraine ","The  Rural news "," The Shulyavka "and information agencies" Interfax "and" Ukrainian News ".
